Start dates for 2023

Start dates for 2023

Our six sports start again from the 7th February. All our sports, except swimming, are on the same days and times and at the same venues as last year.

Swimming has been affected by the closure of the indoor pools while the main building at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre is being renovated. For Term 1 we will only have one swimming day, Thursday, so there will be NO Monday session. We chose Thursday because it was quieter and we have been able to book four lanes so that we have room for both our competent swimmers and learner swimmers. There will be jogging belts for those who need them. We will look at indoor pool options for Term 2.

We welcome new athletes to all our sports. They can come to up to three sessions in as many sports as they like before making a decision to join. Joining Special Olympics involves filling in registration forms which include a medical that is renewed every four years. We also would welcome enquiries from people wishing to become volunteers. Once again there are forms to fill in; they include police vetting every three years.

With the next National Summer Games (NSG) less than three years away, in December 2025, any sports tournaments athletes participate in count toward potentially qualififying for a place on the team. Only registered athletes and volunteers can take part in one day and two day (Tier 1 and Tier 2) tournaments and the NSG so we need new athletes to join this year. No decisions will be made about the team until next year but those wishing to be considered for the team need to show thir commitment to the sport/s they take part in from this year. Our first tournaments take place in March. We will share more information when it becomes available.

Please go to our Sports Available page for information on each sport.
